This
system allows the ZiLOG Z8F6401 to interface
with an Ethernet controller. With this design,
the Encore!® has plenty of I/O pins left
over for various other purposes. In this case,
the leftover pins control stepper motors.
This system effectively proves on a small
scale that the Z8F6401 can control manufacturing
equipment and can be controlled by Ethernet.
A fully implemented UDP stack with ARP can
fit into the Z8F6401’s flash memory with much
more space available for other control systems
code. When it comes to throughput, the Cirrus
CS8900A Ethernet chip used in this design
has a large buffer space that can store frames
long enough for the Encore!® to receive
and process them.
