Infrared
remote controls are present in most homes.
They enable you to control a TV, DVD, and
sound system from your easy chair. Now you
can use a standard TV remote to control a
robot too. The Z8F6401-based I.R. Robot is
a simple robotic platform that is inexpensive
to build and easy to scale up in size. The
Z8 interprets signals from a universal remote
control and commands a simple motor drive
system. The I.R. Robot maneuvers forward and
backward, and can turn in any direction using
its stepper motor propulsion system. The power
demand is so small that the on-board power
supply consists of only six AAA batteries.
The firmware was developed using the ZiLOG
Encore!® development system, ZDS II, and
then ported to the final design via the Encore!
Smart Cable.
